Teaching Portfolio

Introduction

From Student to Teacher

After completing my university studies in Theatre, I decided to take some time to travel and gain  teaching experience to better prepare myself for becoming a certified teacher back home.

Little did I know that I would stay in Korea as an English teacher for almost four years.  I adopted a growing curiosity for ESL teaching, and now I hope to continue learning, adapting, applying new skills and  bringing my theatrical perspective into these unique classrooms.

Kim’s English Academy

Position: ESL  teacher for Kindergarten program  and afterschool Elementary program

During my first year in Korea, I taught at a private English institute.  I worked with children who were experiencing the English language for the first time.   It was challenging, as there was a constant need for repetition, as well as a variety of activities and teaching styles.

On the other hand, it was rewarding to conduct the classes and see how much the students' knowledge grew in such a short time.  It was inspiring how they had little fear of making mistakes and usually embraced whatever lesson was being taught!  It made me want to continue in the language teaching field.

Sahm Yook Elementary School

Position: ES L teacher for English Immersion Program (Elementary levels 1-6).

*Director of Foreign Teachers 2010-2011

I joined the Sahmyook English Immersion team in Daegu, South Korea for three years.  It was an incredible program that combined English, Science, and Math to teach the language.

I worked with students of all levels and learned how to incorporate a variety of teaching methods to ensure a fun and energetic class.  I was required to use the given curriculum to create and execute effective lesson plans for each subject.  Again, watching the students' abilities develop over the course of the year was an indescribable reward.

For my final year , I also worked with cirriculum selection, test editting , and teacher training .   It was a great experience to  hel p the program develop and improve to benefit the students.

CELTA training course

Position: CELTA trainee;  ESL teacher to Beginner and Elementary level adults

I had the opportunity to teach adult classes to Thai students.  In addition to participating in daily seminars and workshops highlighting effective teaching techniques, I was able to experiment with these new approaches in the classroom.

It opened my eyes to teaching adults.  They were attending these classes out of their own free will, and they had expectations of their teachers to bring high quality lessons.I was able to bring my own  personality and teaching strategies and mix them with these new techniques to create unique and fun classes.

Study English in Canada (SEC Toronto)

Position: ESL Fundamentals Instructor for Intermediate level adults; Customer Service Protocol Instructor

I have recently made the giant leap back to home soil and have landed in a huge international scene in Toronto.  I started off working at Study English in Canada Institute (SEC Toronto), a great ESL institute, where students from all over the globe come to gain a Canadian experience and study English within a range of structured classes.  I taught Grammar fundamentals based on a set curriculum and applied interesting lesson plans to engage my ever-changing groups of students.

I also instructed a Customer Service Protocol class, working with eager students to learn communication skills in a customer service environment both as a customer and a company employee.  It has been extremely enjoyable to get back in the classroom, as well as meeting people from such different cultures.  I still get to feel as though I'm abroad!

English School of Canada

Position: ESL Instructor / TOEFL & IELTS Writing for Test Prep Instructor

I was part of the ESL team at English School of Canada in Toronto.  It is a highly reputable school with great programs for students and incredible organization and resources for teachers.  I taught in the standard ESL program preparing material and instructing classes in Integrated Skills, Grammar, and Communication.

I also instructed a writing class for students who are part of the TOEFL and IELTS preparation course, which allowed me to broaden my horizon and gain teaching experience in a new and challenging program.

Pathways Regent Park

Position: Tutor
I worked as a volunteer tutor at Pathways Regent Park.  This program provides high school students in the area with a safe, clean, and helpful environment to complete homework assignments.  It was a very rewarding opportunity to see the potential that these students bring each day and the positive attitude they leave with after achieving a difficult task.  I am honoured to be a member of this community that has realized the benefits of giving these students a helping hand.

University of Toronto- OISE

Position: Teacher Candidate

I completed my Bachelor of Education at one of the top institutes for education in the world- The Ontario Institute for Studies in Education.  I am qualified to teach ESL, English, Drama, and Guidance and Career Education.   I have been re-evaluating and adding to my philosophy of teaching since completing the program and  I have enjoyed studying, debating, and challenging the education system to make it a stronger, more engaging, and beneficial place for our young people.  I had the advantage of working with amazing and respected instructors in the education field and have had a great opportunity to work in Toronto high schools and at the board level with program coordinators and instructional leaders.   I now have so many new mentors to look up to and I look forward to the continuation of this incredible journey as a teacher.

Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto

Dr. Bette Stephenson Centre for Learning

Position: Adult Day School Teacher (Gr.9-12)

After cocompleting my Bachelor of Education, I was lucky enough to land a position at an Adult Day School.  This continuing education program has been an incredible eye-opener into the variety of students that exist.  I have the priviledge to work with many newcomers to Canada through the ESL program as well as assisting other adults to pursue their high school diploma requirements that they were unable to attain at an earlier time.

I always look forward to the challenges of motivating AND being motivated BY these unique learners on a daily basis.
